Carlos MARÍN was returned to office as the President of the National Table Tennis Federation of Honduras at the National General Assembly held on 7th January 2006.
A country with a population of seven million, in 1998 it was devastated by Hurricane Mitch which killed almost six thousand people and caused approximately US$2 billion in damage, it has the distinction of possessing the only table tennis player from Central America to have qualified for the Olympic Games, twenty-three year old Izzwa MEDINA.
In 2004 Izzwa MEDINA competed in the Athens Olympics; meanwhile, in 2005 at the Volkswagen 48th World Championships, she qualified for the main draw in the Women's Singles event, the first player from Central American to achieve that feat.
Chinese Taipei
Alongside elder sister Zzwitjhallim, the two young ladies have won a host of titles on the Latin American continent and in order to raise their level of play and promote table tennis further in Honduras, Carlos MARÍN has worked closely with the Chinese Taipei Table Tennis Association. They have assisted with equipment whilst also sending coaches to assist in raising the level of play; between 1992 and 1998 YOU Wu-Hsiun coached in Honduras, whilst from 1998 to 2004 CHANG Wei-Chuang fulfilled that role.
Furthermore, Izzwa and Zzwitjhallim have been able to visit Chinese Taipei for training, both being there during the latter months of 2005.
Executive Committee
Also at the National General Assembly on 7th January 2005 the new Executive Committee, which will be charged with running the affairs of the National Table Tennis Federation of Honduras, for the next four years (January 2006 to December 2009) was elected.
