ANDY PEREIRA SAFELY THROUGH BUT IT'S DEFEAT FOR ERIC MANCINI

Top seed Cuba’s Andy Pereira duly booked his place in the semi-finals of the Boys’ Singles event at the Latin American Junior Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador on Saturday 22nd June 2007.

In the quarter-finals he beat the Dominican Republic’s Emil Santos in a close five games duel. He won 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4. However, there was a surprise in store for the number two seed, Brazil’s Eric Mancini. He lost to Colombia’s Jaime Valenciano at the quarter-final stage.

Jamie Valenciano won 13-11, 4-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-5.

Further Defeat
Meanwhile, there was also defeat for the number three seed, El Salvador’s Josué
Donado, he lost in the quarters to Brazil’s Humberto Manhani but for the number four seed, the Dominican Republic’s Juan Antonio Víla there were no quarter-final headaches.

He overcame Cuba’s Jorge Campos in the round of the last eight.

Casualties
Similarly, there were casualties in the Girls’ Singles event. The second seeded Brazilian, Jessica Yamada lost to Cuba’s Leisy Jimenez who then beat Argentina’s Ana Codina to book her semi-final place.

However, for top seed, Colombia’s Paula Medina there were no problems.

She beat Brazil’s Livia Mizobuchi but for the third and fourth seeds there were earlier than expected exits. Third seeded Brazilian Karin Fukushima lost in the quarters to Chile’s Paula Avalos whilst at the same stage, the fourth seed Venezuela’s Ruaida Ezzeddine was beaten by Gabriela Kock of Brazil.

Cadets
In the Cadet Boys’ Singles Argentina’s Ariel Tepliitzky and Venuezuela’s Gustavo Ascaso duly progressed to the penultimate stage as did Chile’s Felipe Olivares and Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre.

A place in the semi-finals for Marcelo Aguirre and Paraguay is also represented in the Cadet Girls’ Singles. Top seed Sandy Gavián duly booked her place as did Ecuador’s Tania Almendariz, Brazil’s Kim Inokuchi and Venezuela’s Roxy Gonzalez.
